At the height of the Cold War, the US military devised a plan to position a top secret military base within the ice sheet of Greenland. Camp Century was carved from the ice, bearing a remarkable resemblance to the Rebel ice base from the film, "The Empire Strikes Back". Powered by a custom-built nuclear reactor, Camp Century would have provided an ideal strategic location for hidden nuclear missiles. But two years after construction, US planners had a troubling realization. Snow and ice move across the surface much faster than they had ever realized, spelling doom for the isolated, frozen base. | http://www.ahctv.com/what-history-forgot/ #WhatHistoryForgot Tuesdays at 10pm on AHC Subscribe to AHC: http://bit.ly/AHCSubscribe

Just a few miles south of the U.S. border lies Centro de Ejecucion de Sanciones (CEDES), one of Mexico's most notorious penitentiaries. To get a glimpse of life at CEDES, we'll meet some of its inmates, including Rogelio, who is in lockdown 24 hours a day because of his suspected gang involvement; Raul and Rosi, who fell in love behind bars and now hope to get married there; and Vincent, an American who must spend all day in his cell for his own protection. Mexico has the largest American prisoner population outside of the United States. In 2001, there were over 600 Americans serving time in Mexican prisons, including 48 in Nuevo Laredo. Nuevo Laredo, Mexico is the largest inland port in the western hemisphere. Around 40% of all U.S.-Mexico trade passes between Nuevo Laredo and its siste...
California is in the middle of the worst drought it’s seen in nearly 500 years. We’re heading out to the driest towns to see just how screwed we really are and what people are doing to carry on. California tends to be thought of as a home to movie stars, cults, gangs, hippies, and bronzed beach babes. But beyond the facade of Hollywood, some darker issues loom over Tinsel Town. VICE will delve into some of the Sunshine State's seedier stories, as well as explore the oddest subcultures, practices, problems, and pseudolegal operations in the state. The new Vice.com series CALIFORNIA SOUL takes us into these bizarre worlds, painting a realistic picture of the glamorously strange side of California. "Nobody felt safe; the prisoners weren't safe, the staff weren't safe...A radical idea began to spread: maybe meditation could help." Psychotherapist Jenny Phillips describes how the tranquility of ancient Buddhist meditation at a maximum-security correctional facility helps prisoners emerge from a rigorous Vipassana program with a renewed self-image and a greater sense of personal responsibility. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The greenland shark is thought to be one of the oldest species of shark in existence, and specimens have been found that are up to 400 years old! And not all sharks are giant, hul...

We arrive at Kongsfjorden, our first Spitsbergen destination with the 14th July Glacier cloaked in fog. To the rear, steep scree slopes and sheer rock walls and, in front, a glacier breaks off into the Arctic Ocean. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. Coal mining was the basis of the settlement and many people came to this desolate place. Later, the extraction of coal became unprofitable and it was virtually abandoned. A har...

Travel video about destination Arctic. In the Arctic, the circumpolar region of the north, it is necessary to travel by boat as there are no roads in the frozen world around the North Pole. A great way to experience this region is by cruise ship as they use small rubber boats, zodiacs, to access the Arctic’s islands and bays. The island of Spitsbergen owes its name to the jagged mountains of the west coast with its black, bare rock mountains and valleys that contain huge glaciers. Ice streams flow continuously, at the front of which their glacial tongues break loose into the Polar sea. This is the Land of the Polar Bear, the Arctic’s most famous carnivore, a ruthless predator always in search of food. The signs of climate change are everywhere so that the pack ice often becomes porous as...
With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York. Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja. Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders;...
