Jessica Proctor is on parole. She just tested positive for marijuana. Her parole officer could send her back to prison -- but will she? Subscribe on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1BycsJW Some states are giving parole officers the discretion to dole out a second chance after relatively minor infractions, rather than automatically sending people who violate their parole restrictions back behind bars. “If I was to lock up everyone that’s run into Jessica's situation,” says Officer Katherine Montoya, “I wouldn't have a caseload.” Stream “Life on Parole” and watch Proctor’s story unfold in full at pbs.org/frontline/life-on-parole, and read The New York Times' related reporting at nytimes.com/parole. The documentary follows Proctor and three other former prisoners in Connecticut as they navigate th...

Welcome to Gothic, Colorado—one of the coldest places in the United States. This ghost town has been abandoned since the 1920s, but there is at least one person who still calls it home. For more than 40 years, current resident billy barr has lived in a small cabin, recording data about the snowpack to pass the time. In this short film, Morgan Heim of Day’s Edge Productions profiles the legendary local who inadvertently provided scientists with a treasure trove of climate change data. Hundreds of Norewegian deep sea divers have accused the government of 'neglect'. Around 30 years ago, up to 4,000 divers were employed to build oil pipelines, at potentially dangerous depths. Their efforts have helped make Norway one of the world's richest nations. But the divers claim their lives have been ruined by injuries suffered in the pursuit of oil. Nick Clark reports.

Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript: If Plato were to come back today I think he would have a lot to say about so many things but crowdsourcing would be of great interest to him. I take Plato to the Googleplex and he's very, very interested in our technology. And that would appeal to him very much. But he gets into a conversation at the Googleplex with a software engineer on crowdsourcing and could crowdsourcing answer the kind of ethical questions that he first raised. And he is, he's quite interested in this idea but he's very down on it. He's very much against it because, you know, ...
Erroll Brantley has been in and out of prison on a range of charges since 1999. English/Nat South Africa's police force has the world's highest suicide rate - 10 times greater than police in the United States. A high number of police officers are also killed in duty. This double tragedy has prompted Police Commissioner George Fivaz to unveil a memorial to the force's lost officers. In Eldorado Park, outside Johannesburg, a monument to slain police officers is the focal point for the relatives left behind. Elizabeth Bee's son, Shane, was a police officer for four years before being shot last June. Hers is a common tragedy for relatives of South African police officers. An estimated 60 out of every 100-thousand officers commit suicide -- twelve times the national average, and ten times greater than the suicide rate among police officers in the Unite...
In the Pacific Northwest, people are stripping moss for the horticultural trade at such an alarming rate that it's now illegal to harvest it. Ecologist Nalini Nadkarni knows that moss is a key component to the eco-system of the region, which makes it important to study. But this globe-trotting scientist at The Evergreen State College needed a lot of help recording research data from some folks who have much more time than she does. Where better to find potential research assistants with lots of time on their hands than the nearby medium security Cedar Creek Corrections Center? With support from the National Science Foundation, Nadkarni's idea has been so successful that now the prisoners are starting bee keeping and composting programs, in addition to growing and recording data about m...
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and m...

Travel video about destination Arctic. In the Arctic, the circumpolar region of the north, it is necessary to travel by boat as there are no roads in the frozen world around the North Pole. A great way to experience this region is by cruise ship as they use small rubber boats, zodiacs, to access the Arctic’s islands and bays. The island of Spitsbergen owes its name to the jagged mountains of the west coast with its black, bare rock mountains and valleys that contain huge glaciers. Ice streams flow continuously, at the front of which their glacial tongues break loose into the Polar sea. This is the Land of the Polar Bear, the Arctic’s most famous carnivore, a ruthless predator always in search of food. The signs of climate change are everywhere so that the pack ice often becomes porous as...

With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York. Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja. Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Travel video about destination Arctic. The Arctic is an icy world surrounding the North Pole and a strange and wonderful world of ice, snow, land and water. To experience this region we travel by ship. Soon everyone is on board and our adventure can begin. The route leads north along the coast which is separated by deep fjords. We arrive at Kongsfjorden, our first Spitsbergen destination with the 14th July Glacier cloaked in fog. To the rear, steep scree slopes and sheer rock walls and, in front, a glacier breaks off into the Arctic Ocean. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. Coal mining was the basis of the settlement and many people came to this desolate place. Later, the extraction of coal became unprofitable and it was virtually abandoned. A har...
